The delegation of the EU "Eurojust" agency was in the RA General Prosecutor's Office

25 March, 2022

Today, the RA General Prosecutor received the delegation of EU criminal justice Agency “Eurojust”, led by its president, Ladislav Hamran. Ambassador of Armenian to the Netherlands Tigran Balayan also participated in the meeting.

Welcoming the guests, Arthur Davtyan noted, that the long-term multifaceted cooperation with the EU has contributed to the reforms in the field of justice in our country and the development of the institutions of democracy, human rights, and freedom.

The RA Prosecutor General emphasized that the fight against corruption and money laundering is one of the absolute priorities of the RA Prosecutor's Office. He outlined the anti-corruption reforms implemented in Armenia, in particular, the investment by the institution that confiscates property of illegal origin and its current results. It was stressed that a significant part of the illegal assets had been withdrawn from the country, including to EU countries, and that the agency's support in cooperating with the relevant structures of foreign countries could play a significant role in returning them.

He thanked the agency for the support provided to the RA Prosecutor's Office on the basis of good will within the framework of cooperation. Since the beginning of 2020, more than 50 petitions for legal aid have been addressed to the competent authorities of other countries through Eurojust, most of which have been processed and similar petitions have been received.

Ladislav Hamran welcomed Armenia's interest in expanding cooperation with “Eurojust”, expressing readiness to continue the approach of providing an effective communication platform between Armenia and the EU's justice bodies. He expressed hope that the work on creating a legal basis will take these relations to a qualitatively new level.

During the meeting were discussed, starting from the days of the aggressive war unleashed by Azerbaijan in 2020, based on the available evidence provided by the agency on the involvement of terrorist, mercenary groups and other war crimes committed by Azerbaijan, problems of applying general principles of universal legal jurisdiction to facilitate objective investigation into the war crimes within the “Eurojust” Genocide Network.

The structures and possibilities of developing cooperation with “Eurojust” in conducting investigative inquiries, making more purposeful use of partner resources in the fight against transnational crime, improving the professional skills of prosecutors based on the development of European law, and other areas were also discussed during the meeting.
