Presentation of the book "Armenia in the Ancient Dutch Maps"

24 May, 2022

On the 24th of May, the presentation of the book "Armenia in the Ancient Dutch Maps" took place at the History Museum of Armenia. The book was published on the initiative of the Armenian Embassy in the Netherlands to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia and the Netherlands. The book presents around fifty Dutch maps, in which Armenia is mentioned,  as well as the first Armenian map published in Amsterdam in 1695.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the Netherlands Tigran Balayan, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Armenia Niko Schermers, the Director of the History Museum of Armenia David Poghosyan delivered remarks at the event. They referred to the centuries-old Armenian-Dutch relations, as well as Amsterdam's unique role in the history of Armenian printing.

Ambassador Balayan noted that the idea of compiling such a collection and presenting it to the international community arose about two years ago, but practical works in this direction began around two months ago, in cooperation with the Archaeological Museum of the University of Amsterdam, who provided the embassy with a collection of maps depicting Armenia. The Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Armenia Nico Schermers in his welcoming remarks noted that he was proud of this initiative and expressed hope that such examples would serve as a basis for further cooperation. According to the director of the History Museum of Armenia Davit Poghosyan, the book is important for the appreciation of the Armenian-Dutch relations.
