Commemoration for Armenian genocide victims in the Netherlands

Commemoration ceremonies dedicated to the 104th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide took place in different parts of the Netherlands on April 24.

 

During the ceremony held near the new cross-stone and the monument in honour of the Armenian Genocide victims in Amsterdam, T. Balayan, Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the Netherlands, MPs Sadet Karabulut, Joel Voordewind and Kees van der Staaij, who represent various political factions in the Netherlands, as well as members of the City Council of Amsterdam, heads of Armenian community organisations delivered speeches to honour the victims of the Armenian genocide.  

During the commemoration ceremony in Assen, Armenian, Turkish and Kurdish youth laid a wreath near the khachkar placed in honour of the Armenian Genocide victims. Ambassador T. Balayan, Mato Hakhverdyan, President of Abovyan Armenian Cultural Union, Inge Drost, Secretary of the Federation of Armenian Organizations of the Netherlands, Masis Abrahamyan, Chairman of the Armenian National Committee of Netherlands, Janna Booij-Venekamp member of Assen Municipality Council and Dirk Roodzant, historian-researcher on the Armenian Genocide gave speeches during the ceremony.

A commemoration ceremony was also held in Almelo at the Armenian Genocide memorial and was preceded by Holy Martyrs Interfaith Procedure delivered by Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, pontifical legate in Western Europe. Ambassador T. Balayan, Arjen Gerritsen Mayor of Almelo, high-ranking clergymen from Assyrian and Coptic Churches, and representatives of Armenian communities were present. After the anthems of Armenia and the Netherlands were performed at the Armenian Genocide memorial, a wreath-laying ceremony took place.

Armenian Ambassador Tigran Balayan, Arjen Gerritsen, Mayor of Almelo, Onik Gelician, Chairperson of the Church Council delivered speeches during the memorial evening at the Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator in Almelo.

Commemoration ceremonies dedicated to the 104th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in the Netherlands have been widely covered by Dutch media.
